“Green box” by Converter Technology
Technology:
Any – the facility is a “ESS second life testing equipment”
Type of energy stored:
Electrochemical
Nominal capacity (kWh):
N/A
Nominal power (kVA):
3 × 25 cascaded DC/DC
Year of installation:
2015
Response time:
Less than 1 second
Self-discharge (%/month):
N/A
Efficiency (%):
99 (this is the efficiency of the converter)
Grid Voltage (V):
350 for connection to an ABB inverter
ESS communication system:
An OpalRT system which will probably be replaced by an FPGA and digital control interface as there have been issues with the OpalRT Unit. This will link through to the Sheffield NI kit at Willenhall.
HMI:
Needs designing.
Overview of the AC Grid interface:
The system is a 3level cascaded dc-dc converter system connected to a 100kVA ABB inverter. The output of the inverter is connected to an isolation transformer at Willenhall.
ANCILLARY SERVICES (<30s response time for voltage control, frequency response):
YES (when controller designed)
RESERVE (>30s response, at least 30 min duration):
Maybe – depends on battery connected
INTRA-DAY PEAK SHIFTING (balancing demand/supply of electrical and thermal within day):
Maybe – depends on battery connected – electrical part only
INTER-DAY LEVELLING (balancing over days, especially considering low wind events):
Maybe depends on battery connected

No
SEASONAL THERMAL PEAK SHIFTING (storing hot/cold thermal energy between seasons):
No

No
UNINTERRUPTABLE POWER SUPPLY:
No
CUSTOMER BALANCING:
Maybe depends on battery connected.
